Prayer Requests for Week Commencing 01-10-2007

The following information comes mainly from the Echoes weekly prayer bulletin and further details can be found on their web site. Other prayer requests have come from direct communication with the missionary involved.  An index of previous weekly Missionary Prayer Requests is given at the foot of the page.

ZAMBIA

Please pray for staff and students at Chengelo School following a recent tragedy which resulted in the death of a Zambian child. Janine Campbell had taken a number of children out horse-riding, and on their way back to the stables the horses suddenly bolted and all the riders fell. Most sustained only minor injuries, but Suwi was seriously injured and later died in hospital. He was a lovely Christian lad in Grade 7 and will be greatly missed. Please pray especially for Janine and for Suwi’s adoptive parents, for his classmates and the staff at the school. A memorial service will be held on 5th October for all the pupils, parents, staff and workers at the school. Pray that the Lord will use this time to speak to the hearts of those attending.

ECHOES have had an update on the condition of Helen Hindson, who was involved in a vehicle accident on 18th September. She has undergone surgery on her broken hip and pelvis, and also on her face. Praise God that she is feeling a little better and is in good spirits. Her mother is with her.

FRANCE

David and Brigitte Sutherland  (Arras) have requested prayer for their monthly mini-Bible school for the 18-25 age group. The next one takes place on 5th October. They also have a monthly Bible hour, held on a Tuesday, which has replaced the traditional weekly Bible study. Numbers at this have been encouraging and have included mature Christians, new believers and non-Christians. Prayer is also requested for four people who are considering baptism, and for Brigitte, who faces sinus surgery on 5th October.

Mike and Alison Packer (Laval) request prayer for their 17 yr old nephew, Denison, who  underwent a second operation last Monday to remove the remainder of the brain tumour he has. Denison was understandably very anxious about the outcome since the surgeon had indicated that there may be complete recovery or serious consequences. Please pray for skill for the medical team and peace for Denison.

SPAIN

Ken and Alison Barrett are involved in a number of events in October for which they would appreciate prayer. Please remember their outreach in the local park, Ken’s preaching engagements at Alcala on the 7th, and pray also for a national conference of Brethren churches,  on 12th and 13th October. They will be focusing on Youth, and a number of the older young people from Alcala will be there.

OTHER

On Wednesday 3rd October, Dr John Lennox—a top-flight mathematician, expert on science and faith, and a first-rate speaker and  Bible expositor -  will be engaged in a public debate with Richard Dawkins, atheist and author of ‘The God Delusion’, on the existence of God. This will take place in the USA at Birmingham, Alabama, at 7:00 pm; it will be broadcast live on radio in the USA. John would value prayer that he will be able not only to provide an articulate and well argued defence, but also to honour our Lord Jesus in his presentation. As I understand it a Federal Court Judge will be moderating.

John  has particularly asked for prayer for the following:

  •  For the debate to be marked by courtesy and friendliness.

  •  That John himself will be firm and gracious.

  •  Dawkins is both a brilliant scientist and John needs to match him at this level.  In particular, therefore, that there will be a positive element that really furthers the Gospel.

  • That the Lord will be honoured!

 LOCAL

Stephen Richardson (Jarrow) is the planned speaker for Sunday, 7th October.
