This
verse gives us the message on how we can be saved from the
consequences of our sins. It is by calling upon the name of the
Lord. It doesn't matter who we are, none are excluded, and none who
call on His Name will be denied.
As we
read through the Gospels in the Bible, time and again the needy
called upon His name and He responded in blessing.
The blind beggar, the ten lepers, the
dying thief, to mention but a few, called and were saved. These
people called on the Lord because they knew the need of their
hearts, and they knew that there was no hope to be found in
themselves or others. They came to the only source of healing and
salvation—the Lord. Our salvation is only a “call”
away. We are guaranteed an immediate response that will save our
soul for all eternity. Why not call today? All we need to do is to
confess to God that we have sinned, that we have gone our own way,
done our own thing, broken His laws, and we want to have a
turn-around in our lives. Then we are to believe on the Lord Jesus
Christ, that He is the Son of God, and that He died on the Cross
bearing our sins in His body. Three days later He rose from the
dead, was seen to be alive by hundreds, and 40 days later ascended
into heaven, where He is today, seated at the right hand of God.
Perhaps
there are some who are reading this who have had doubts about
whether they are really saved? Perhaps there have been times in
their life when they have let the Lord down and thought they didn’t
deserve anything from Him. They’re not alone! Every Christian
experiences difficulties like this. Times when our faith is weak, we
feel uncertain about the future, or we wonder, "Am
I truly born again?" The great thing about the Bible is that
it can remove all our doubts and calm our fears. God’s Word can give
us peace of mind and reassurance.
There
are no doubts about salvation in this verse. “Whosoever
shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” There
is no “might” or “could”. Salvation isn’t just a possibility, it is
a certainty. If we have trusted the Lord Jesus by confessing our sin
and calling on Him to rescue us, there is no doubt about it: we are
saved!
Nothing
can change this. Once we are saved, we cannot be lost. The Bible
assures us that as soon as we trust the Lord Jesus, we are eternally
secure. The Lord Jesus Himself said: “I
give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither
shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John
10:28).
So, next
time we feel down or unsure, let us remember this: “Neither
death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor
things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any
other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God,
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom
8:38-39).
