The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990, and after a few teething troubles, began to relay back to earth incredible snapshots. The one on the left entitled, "The Sombrero Galaxy" was voted by the Daily Mail in 2006 as the greatest space photograph. The dimensions of the galaxy are as spectacular as its appearance; it has 800 billion suns and is 50,000 light years across.
Astronomy and the powerful images now projected by the Hubble space telescope have given us the ability to appreciate the sheer scale of our universe, a universe where distances are measured in light years. That's approximately 5.88 trillion miles! The Milky Way galaxy that we live in is 100,000 of these light years across and contains so many stars that if we counted them at the rate of one per second, it would take us 2,500 years! Scientists all agree that it is only one of hundreds of billions of other galaxies.
And yet the Bible, the
Word of God, simply declares of God in Gen 1:16
that "He made the stars
also". Isa 40:26 tells us more: "He
calls them all by names by the greatness of His
might". The awesome power of our God is
majestically displayed night by night, and yet
this is the same God who is interested in me. He
is the same God who "sent
his only begotten Son into the world, that we
might live through Him" (1John 4:9).
When I consider the insignificance of who I am
in relation to the immensity of creation, all I
can do is bow my heart and give thanks to God
that He was ever "mindful
of me", that He loved me so much He sent
His Son to Calvary's cross to die for me. The
God who knows every star by name is interested
in me. He allows me to call Him Father and hears
and answers my prayers.
If you've never done it before, go out on the
next clear night, take a look into the heavens,
and thank God that He was ever "mindful"
of you.
