The recent vote (June 2016) by the people
of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union has raised many
questions on what the future holds, with completely opposite answers
given by different authorities. Will the nation be economically
poorer because of more difficult trading restrictions? or will they
find that trading more with the rest of the world gives more
benefits? Will the UK feel more in control of its own borders?
The answers are numerous, and on this subject it could be many years
before we know the practical result.
People have always had an interest in what
the future holds. Some
people look at horoscopes to try and find out what the future holds for
them. Most often it is probably regarded as a bit of fun, but it is abhorrent to
God, and yet part of us wants to know what is going to happen to us. Will we
cope with the level of pension we get? Will we suffer any disabling disease? When we are older, how long are we going to live? What happens next? We want to
know the future.
Jesus knew His future. He frequently spoke of “His
hour had not yet come, or had come", e.g.
John 2:4;
John 13:1. He was referring to a definite time when He would go to
the Cross. He knew this was going to happen, that He would rise from the dead (Mat
16:21), and that He would
come again (John 14:3).
There are some things that we can know for certain
about the future:
1. We are all going to die and after that comes
judgement
2. That those who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved from the
consequences of their sin.
3. That those who reject /ignore /don’t believe in
the Lord Jesus Christ
will be condemned.
Horoscopes are a fraud, but we can have a certain
hope for the future if we trust Jesus died on the cross taking the
punishment for our sins, that He was buried, on the third day rose from the dead
and is now seated in heaven, at the right hand of God.
