Christian Treasure

It never used to be a problem. You had a wee piggy bank and from time to time you shoved a note or coin into the slot and everything was safe. You were building your fortune one penny at a time. As long as that piggy bank was safe then your money was safe as well.

How times have changed. You grow up and then start to put money into a big Piggy Bank with branches on the High Street. As soon as you put it in you are thinking about taking it out from cash machines and it goes in and out with regularity.

How reassuring to know that there is never a credit crunch in Heaven. As a believer in the Lord Jesus we can be confident that "God is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day" (2Tim 1:12).

A consequence of increased faith in Christ is that we become increasingly convinced of His ability. For Paul this conviction covered every matter and Paul entrusted all things into the care of His Master. "He is able to keep what I have committed to Him. " Also, it covered every day right up until the return of the Lord: "until that Day." Again, the Lord Jesus left us a similar example. He committed His daily situations into the hands of His able heavenly Father: "When He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously" (1Pet 2:23).

The Christian is investing in "a Bank" that cannot fail. The Lord Jesus said "Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Mat 6:20). Let our chief concern be to be prepared for eternity. In heaven nothing corrupts; nothing terminates; no enemies plunder or destroy. To have treasure in heaven is to be heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ. God would encourage us to "set our affections on things above, not on things on the earth", Col 3:2.

The Believer has an inheritance waiting for him, "an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for him" (1Pet 1:4). Through the resurrection of the Lord Jesus we now cherish the hope of that future inheritance in heaven. It's an inheritance that will not fade away and vanish, as that which we inherit in this world does.

The Lord said, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Mat 6 :21). This states a universal truth. A man's heart will be upon what he treasures most. If his treasure is in heaven, heaven will have his heart. If God be the treasure of our souls, our hearts, our affections and desires will be placed on things above. An earthly minded man proves that his treasure is below; a heavenly minded man shows that his treasure is above.
