His Name shall be
called
.
We are told there are two
hundred and fifty-six names given in the Bible for the Lord Jesus Christ. Here
are 3 of them from
Isa 9:6.
-
WONDERFUL
- This word
means either "a marvellous thing - a miracle", or "to excite amazement".
Wonderful
means something beyond normality. It is then a suitable word to describe the
Lord for He is wonderful and excites us in all things.
In the wonder of His
person, in the manner of His birth, in His baptism in Jordan, in His
temptations in the wilderness. His doctrines, miracles, transfiguration on
the mount, His mighty works were all wonderful. His death was wonderful, and
both His resurrection and His ascension resulted in excited admiration and
wonder. He will be Wonderful too in His second coming.
Without
controversy, great is the mystery of godliness. God was manifest in flesh.
(1 Tim. 3:16).
-
COUNSELLOR.
A counsellor is
someone who you consult and who advises you on some matter. Here, the word
denotes one of honourable rank, one who is suited to stand near Heads of
Government as their adviser. This word counsellor
in several translations has been joined with wonderful,
thus - wonderful counsellor; but it expresses a distinct attribute,
or quality.
He is our
Counsellor,
because we can consult with Him, and He counsels and advises us on the right
way. No problem is insoluble to Him. When upon earth, He was found in every
human circumstance from weddings to funerals, amongst every class of society
from lepers to rulers, and amid every age group from children to the
elderly. On each occasion He was the perfect Counsellor. What a Saviour to
have with us day by day!
As for the quality of His
counsel, Paul tells us that in Him (Jesus) "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and
knowledge." (Col.
2:3). Truly our Lord Jesus fulfils this role as He guides us today through
His Word.
-
THE MIGHTY
GOD.
This is one of several examples where the title "God" is given to the Son, e.g. John 1:1,
John 20:28; 1
Tim. 3:16; Heb. 1:8. Isaiah
prophesied "a virgin shall be with child, and shall
bring forth a son, and they shall call His Name Immanuel, which being
interpreted is God with us", Mat 1:23.
Christ is God, as can be
seen from His nature being the same as His Father's, from His works - those He did
before the incarnation, such as the creation of all things out of nothing,
the
upholding of all things by the word or His power
(Heb
1:3). Also He is
the
Mighty God by the
works He did when here on earth. His miracles of healing, His power over the
elements so that He could change water into wine, rebuke the wind and sea,
cast out demons, raise the dead. Above all He is
the mighty God
in the great work
of redemption, rendering powerless our great enemy (Heb 2:14). The soldiers
fell to the ground as He identified Himself to them and Judas as the "I
AM", (John 18:6).
He is called "my
Lord and my God" by
Thomas on seeing the wounds in His hands and side. He is said to be
God manifest
in the flesh (1 Tim
3:16),
over all, God blessed for ever
(Rom 9:5). Again He is the
mighty
God by what He does
now as He intercedes for us at the throne of grace.
He is able to
save to the uttermost
(Heb 7:25) and such is
the work of the
Mediator
of a
new covenant (1 Tim
2:4) that no one less than
the mighty God
could accomplish it.
