Behold My
Servant.
The name "Servant"
is applied by Isaiah the prophet to the
Messiah, to the entire
nation of Israel, to the
godly remnant of the people
(Isa 43:10),
and to Cyrus.
Usually the context makes clear which one is intended. In
Isa 42:1
it is clearly the Lord Jesus—upheld and chosen by God and endued
with the Holy
Spirit.
It is amazing
that the One who was called the Son of God should here be called “My
Servant”. In a Jewish household
they were well aware that sons were not servants and servants were
not sons; even the Prodigal knew that: "I
am no more worthy to be called thy son, make me as one of thy hired
servants
Luk 15:19.
But here God calls His Son, “My
Servant”.
Jehovah could
say of the Saviour "This is My
beloved Son in whom I find all My delight"
(Mat 3:17,
JND). Our Lord was the Beloved Son and the Perfect Servant. He lived
and served for the pleasure of His Father. The Lord is God's
Servant. Paul wrote that the One who was in the form of God “emptied
Himself, taking a bondman’s form”
(Phil 2:7,
JND). It demonstrated His submissiveness.
As He came into
the world He said, "Lo, I come to do
Thy will, O God",
Psalm 40:7-8;
Heb 10:9).
During His ministry He could say, "My
meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me",
John 4:34,
and on His last evening on earth He said, "Not
My will, but Thine be done" (Luke
22:42). His life was dedicated to
doing the will of God. He was the unique Son but willing to be
Jehovah's Servant.
He taught
submissiveness not only in word but also in deed, washing the
disciples’ feet; "I am among you as
He that serves (Luke
22:27). The Lord added a new
dignity to service. We can rejoice that we are sons of God through
faith, but can joy too in the privilege of service.
As the Perfect
Servant, the Lord Jesus is the Father's delight.
