Our
Unchanging God
2013 has come to an end. It may have been one in which we have
experienced changes in our own life situation, and those changes may
not have always been for the better. However, one thing we can be
certain of is that our God has not changed. The unchangeableness of
God is implied in His very name,
Jehovah,
"I am that I am"
(Exo 3:14),
and this Name testifies to a God who does not change. Malachi
records “JEHOVAH
changes not” (Mal
3:6), for change could imply
imperfection; we change to either become more or less perfect, but
our God isn't like that.
Even from everlasting to
everlasting, Thou
art
God (Psa
90:2). Note:
· His
divine nature hasn't changed.
· His
promises haven't changed.
· His
care for His people hasn't changed.
· His
love for us hasn't changed.
· The
value of the blood of Christ hasn't changed.
· He
is no less righteous today than He was in the beginning. "I
change not".
· No
word that He has spoken will fall to the ground
· He
is still the rewarder of those that diligently seek Him
· He
is still a just revenger of those that rebel against Him.
· He
is as much an enemy of sin as He ever was.
Jehovah
appeared to Jeremiah and told him he was
loved with an
everlasting love,
Jer
31:3. Not loved just for a
long time but from all eternity, for this love is like Himself,
sovereign, unchangeable, and everlasting. The love of God we
experience did not commence in time with our faith, repentance, and
obedience - these being the fruits and effects of it - but is from
all eternity, and this love will endure to everlasting, without any
variation or change, and nothing can separate us from it (Rom
8:39). His love was not a
momentary impulse, but
from
“everlasting”
to
“everlasting”.
It is amazing that the
all perfect, all sufficient God, knowing the sinfulness of man from
before the foundations of the world, would set Himself to come to
this cursed planet. And it is even more amazing that once here, the
Author of Life would be prepared to die for a people that would
swear in His Name, pluck the beard from His cheeks, and mock His
Holy person. God is love and He changes not (1John
4:7-9).
The
Christian may be rich to-day and poor to-morrow; he may be sick
to-day and well to-morrow; he may be happy to-day and to-morrow he
may be distressed and down in the dumps - but there is no change
with regard to his relationship to God. If He loved us yesterday,
He loves us to-day.
The
unchangeableness of God is the anchor of our faith. The perseverance
of the saints is guaranteed, not by our unchangeable love to God,
but by His unchangeable love to us.
It’s good
to report too that Jesus Christ is the same today as He was at the
beginning of last year. His presence, His power, and His care have
not changed. His compassion also is changeless. He has promised
never to leave nor forsake His own, (Mat
28:20;
Heb
13:5). And more than that, we
can have the assurance He will be unchanged through 2014. He is
Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending. It is then with a
holy boldness that we may truthfully say, we will not fear.
